Chapter 15

Leah

This job had turned out to be so much harder psychologically than I ever thought possible. I was an emotional wreck as we drove away from Griffinsford. Even though I tried to hold it in, the tears kept falling quietly down my cheeks. It was embarrassing, but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t manage to keep a stoic exterior.

My hands were trembling, my stomach was churning, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something about this situation was off. Something niggled at the back of my mind like a warning bell.

I pushed the button to lower the window, but nothing happened. I pressed a couple more times and then quickly wrote it off as being broken. Getting a little air would have been nice, but it wasn’t worth hassling the driver about it. So far, he hadn’t commented on my emotional state or anything else.

The driver took a detour I wasn’t anticipating. Leaning forward, I asked, “Why are we taking secondary roads instead of the interstate? It’ll add at least an hour to our journey.”

He didn’t answer me. Instead, he turned up the music. He was clearly in no mood to deal with an overly emotional woman in his vehicle questioning his decisions. Maybe this wasn’t exactly what he signed up for, but it stood to reason that if he was driving people around for a living, it didn’t make sense to expect that they were always going to have happy, smiling faces.

I turned to look out the window, intent on not letting his behavior bother me. It didn’t matter anyway. We were already halfway to LA.

That strange little niggling in the back of my head grew stronger, but I didn’t really start to put it all together until he stopped for gas and my door wouldn’t open. I slid across to the other side and that wouldn’t open either. A sense of dread and panic began to build in my gut. Was this guy even the driver Wellington sent? It didn’t make sense that he was so irritated, wouldn’t answer simple questions, and now for some godforsaken reason had the child safety locks engaged.

I tapped on the window and pointed to the lock when I caught his eye. He gave me a firm shake of his head and mouthed the word no. Shock roiled through my body. This man was in the process of abducting me. There could be no other explanation for locking me in the vehicle and refusing to let me out. It would also explain why he wasn’t taking the interstate. It would be hard to travel unnoticed with a hysterical woman in the backseat. Traffic was lighter on secondary roads. Everyone knew that, including me.

A small, intense flame of anger fired into life in my gut. I began pounding on the window and screaming for him to let me out of the vehicle. There weren’t a lot of people around, but surely somebody would notice.

The man opened his jacket, lifted a
